3 hours round-trip on slippery trails with an unintended detour.
A beautiful spring day for a hike! I meant to go to Lake Serene, but it was slow going on the slippery slushy trail, so I didn’t have enough time. Also, my feet were SOAKED - turns out water running into waterproof boots from the top bypasses the waterproofing. There is a section of trail where you just have to wade, and I guess I hit some deeper spots.
This might help: when you get to the major water spot (maybe 1/2 mile in?) take sandbars to the left until you find where the trail picks back up - it’s a bit hidden in a cove, but there’s a place a little farther up where people who missed it have scrambled up the bank.
I missed both of those places on my way up and ended up wading farther upstream than I should have. My phone’s map is what helped me get back on course. Hooray for getting reception!
I saw more people than I expected on a weekday. Lots of friendly folks. 8 cars when I arrived and 12 when I left.
I took spikes but didn’t put them on. Two poles were very helpful. High-top 100% waterproof boots are essential, and a change of socks just in case. (Though my shoes were so wet I didn’t bother changing socks.) I kinda wish I had just gone barefoot through that stream section.
I look forward to going back soon and actually making it to Lake Serene!
