"dolos" are engineered log jams to protect the road from the river

Along the water's edge of Upper Hoh Road and Hoh Valley Road, you'll notice concrete structures with large tree trunks and branches "inserted" in a seemingly haphazard manner. These are held in place with beefy metal chain links.

We learned these structures are called "dolos" and weigh about 8-tons when combined with logs to create Engineered Log Jams that will protect the road from the river. The National Park Service would not build a road so close to such a river if these decisions were being made today.
