Trip Report

Kalaloch - Browns Point — Sunday, Mar. 22, 2026

Olympic Peninsula > Pacific Coast
adult human for scale

South of the access stairs by about 5 minutes, the carcass of an 8-foot long sea lion is high on the beach close to the driftwood logs. It's basically right before reaching Kalaloch Creek. We later learned from a staffer at Kalaloch Lodge that it's been there for a few weeks. Although a bit stinky, it is one way to get a very good look at a sea lion for some close-up study.

Natural situations like this are one of the many reasons to keep your dog on a leash: dogs will be able to smell and then reach this decaying animal much much sooner than the humans. Will your dog want to lick or bite it? Might your dog get sick from any bacteria growing on it?
