Sunrise hike to the Storm King overlook on March 14th 2026.
ROAD: Paved and fine for regular cars. The facilities were open and stocked.
TRAIL: Snow-free to start through the forest, with intermittent snow becoming more consistent as we climbed but never getting deeper than a few inches.
The hike was doable without traction today, but if the snow gets compacted or freeze-thaws, I would recommend bringing microspikes. Some of the exposed rocks had a thin layer of black ice, and they were more of a hazard than the snow.
The steep rope section was doable with care, again, with some icy sections that we took slowly.
It was a beautiful morning up top with fresh snow on the surrounding peaks, although definitely chilly!
