My hiking group hiked Talus Rocks today. We met at the East Sunset Way Th at 9:00. Two cars were in the lot when we pulled in. It was overcast skies and 42 degrees. This trailhead has no toilet so plan to green door. There were loads of branches and evergreen fronds in the lot which was a precursor of the whole day. Our 5.8 mile lollipop loop hike followed: Tradition Plateau, Wetlands, Advenuture, High School, Section Line, Talus Rocks, Nook and Bus Trails around Round Lake and back to Tradition Plateau trail. The entire trail was hard packed saturated soil. After the huge windstorm yesterday downed trees and the deadfall debris was everywhere. Adventure trail had a large fir you had to climb over. Nook had 6+ deadfall’s over the trail. We were constantly tossing off evergreen fronds and smaller branches everywhere we walked. We turned back on the Talus Rocks trail at the huge rock face. It had a beautiful legit waterfall cascading down. The branches and logs at the base of the rocks have been displaced and crossing would mean taking 2 steps on slippery logs. I tried it and it was doable with Poles but out of a comfort zone for a few hikers in my group. Trail traffic was super light we saw 6 other trail users the entire time we were out. We saw robins, wrens, juncos, a chipmunk and 2 deer, that’s it for wildlife. Rain held off for the most part, when we stopped at the Round Lake benches for a snack break. When we drove off at 1:25 only 2 cars were in the Th lot. another fantastic day out in nature with friends.
