Chief Joseph Wildlife Area - Shumaker — Thursday, Feb. 26, 2026

Eastern Washington > Palouse and Blue Mountains
The Grande Ronde River

This is one of several units of The Chief Joseph Wildlife Area located near The Grande Ronde River in Asotin County. One can walk for several miles along the river on an old road or ascend old roads up Myers Creek and Hackberry Gulch for big views of the surroundings. There is a parking area as well as a pit toilet nearby. Shumaker Grade drops 7.1 miles and 2600' vertical down to the river from Montgomery Ridge Rd near Anatone. The transition from top to bottom is almost like a change in seasons.

Hiking grassy double track
Sentinel Ponderosa Pine guarding the entrance to Hackberry Gulch
