Trip Report

Vancouver Lake - North Trail, Frenchman's Bar — Sunday, Feb. 22, 2026

Southwest Washington > Vancouver Area

For a change of scenery, we took a rainy afternoon walk on the Frenchman's Bar and Vancouver Lake trails.  We parked at one of the lots heading toward Frenchman's Bar park and headed to Vancouver Lake.  The walk to the lake featured the sights and sounds of Sandhill Cranes (trumpeting, bugling rattling and croaking).

Apparently, there had been a race of some kind at the lake earlier as evidence by the directional arrows and cones that remained.  The crowds were gone and we saw very few people on the trails.  We continued along the Lake, it was a little muddy but not bad and very few deep puddles on the trails, which is more than we can say for the picnic area.

We took a spur trail away from the lake crossed a bridge to walk the road for a little bit before heading back over another spur trail bridge back to the main trail and through the park, heading back the way we came.  On the return we spotted a few Eagles and a large tree full of chatty red-winged black birds.  Once back at the lot where we parked we continued on toward Frenchman's bar park to a lot of crane traffic overhead.

The rain lessened and pretty much stopped by the end of the walk.

In total we walked over 8 miles, with no elevation gain.
