Ten of us set out from the Bellevue Demonstration Garden for a 3.5-mile walk through the Lake Hills Greenbelt. Our first stop was Larsen Lake. We circumnavigated the lake counterclockwise, pausing at the viewing platform and at Henry Thode’s cabin. From there, we continued on to the Phantom Lake viewing platform. The weather remained mostly cloudy and cold, with temperatures in the high 30s. Fortunately, the wind was calm and there was no precipitation.
Along the trail, we learned about the area’s early settlers and agricultural heritage, as well as the geology of the lakes and the ecology of bats. The mostly flat, wide paths made it easy to enjoy lively conversation throughout the walk. After the walk, some of us—the more hardcore outdoor enthusiasts—stayed to enjoy lunch at a picnic table in the Bellevue Demonstration Garden. Others chose the comfort of a warm indoor setting.
It was a relaxed outing—quite different from our usual vigorous hikes in the mountains, but equally enjoyable in its own way.
