Catherine Creek Loop — Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026

We spent a chilly hiking day at Catherine Creek. It was 29 degrees and overcast when we started hiking.

The sun was filtered by the clouds so we didn't feel much warmth from it although the air finally warmed up enough to melt the frost.

We took the trail up Roland Rim, stopping for wildflowers along the way. We crossed Sunflower Hill under the powerlines and found a somewhat wind-sheltered spot for lunch on the rim overlooking Catherine Creek down the slope from the Atwood Road.

After lunch we meandered back down the slope, noticing the roads bulldozed on the landscape by the fire crews attacking the Burdoin Fire last summer.

Despite the cold weather, a surprising number of wildflowers were blooming.

PRO TIP: The portapotty is back at the trailhead again.
