Trip Report

Spencer Island — Friday, Feb. 6, 2026

Puget Sound and Islands > Seattle-Tacoma Area

The birds in the tidal lands and in the sewage treatment ponds are well worth visiting for anyone interested in them. As a hike, Spencer Island conveys little attraction. The whole area is noisy from I5, Hwy 2 and the sewage plant. The background noise ranges upward from 50 db. Small birds, passerines, are drowned out. Much of the loop on southern Spencer Island has no view owing to dense vegetation, blackberries and more. There has been some trail maintenance, thank you!, but the path still is in poor shape.

My suggestion for a mere hike is to go elsewhere. For birding, start from the Smith Island Habitat and Viewing Area (photo). That's the first left after driving past Dagmar's Marina southbound. Then walk out east and along the treatment pond.
