Trip Report

Yudwasta Big Rock Park (Hoag Memorial) — Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026

Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area
View from above (note the eagle at the top of a tree!)

TRAIL IS CURRENTLY CLOSED. (It's still being developed as a trail and is not safe for hikers yet!)

This WTA Trail Workparty was one in a very long series aiming to increase safety and access to this amazing viewpoint in Mount Vernon. There are no amenities at the trailhead, no signage, and in some places no stable footing (yet). Don't come here till it's officially open, for your safety and the safety of the crews working hard!

This weekend, half our crew built a crib ladder for a tricky part of the ascent and the other half spent 6 hours pulling invasive Scotch broom from the summit. (From up on the Big Rock, we spotted an adult and a juvenile eagle, as well as an osprey.)

This trail is eventually going to be a quick but steep out-and-back with a great view at the top. I can't wait to return when it's open!
