Anacortes Community Forest Lands - Sugarloaf, Anacortes Community Forest Lands - Whistle Lake — Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026

Puget Sound and Islands > Whidbey Island
Whistle Lake from the #204 Trail

I started on the trailhead off from the Heart Lake Road next to the beginning of the Mount Erie Road. The #215 trail there goes nearly all the way to the top before taking a right on #238 to the summit of Sugarloaf It was clear so there were good views to the west of the Salish and the Olympics. From the summit I took the #238 again on the section that drops down to the northeast and the trails that eventually continue southeast to the west side of Whistle Lake.

The temperatures have been above freezing overnight in the area so there was no snow or ice on the trails or the lake. There was the seasonal mud and water in spots. The worst was #207 where water flowed down the middle of the trail and into the creek where the footbridge is.

The vault toilet at the parking lot is open and stocked with tp. A map of Anacortes Community Forest Lands is available nearby at the iconic Mount Erie Store. As much as I have hiked in the area the map continues to help a lot when looking for a new route to take

Trails taken: #215 and a short left on #238 to the summit. From the summit R #238 to the headed northeast, right on #226, Right on #230 which turns into #207 and then Right on #21. Right on #204 (AKA Kenny Oaks) to the Lake's west side. Depart the lake on #204, left on #21 up and over a ridge and then left on #320, right on #215 to complete a loop to the parking lot.
