Some minor bumps and potholes on the paved road to the parking lot. The river valley doesn't seem to get much sun this time of year, so the road was a little slippery in spots, be cautious on curves. About 6 cars in the parking lot when we arrived. There is parking on both sides of the road.
Arrived at lot @ 9 AM. Electronic pay station at the trailhead was NOT functioning. Had never seen one of these before, but fortunately I had bought a 1-day Discover NW e-pass ahead of time. As others have mentioned, toilet at parking lot is not open, and solar composter toilet @ Lower Lena Lake campsites is also closed due to "pH imbalance due to over-use leading to excess material" 🤢. So plan your wees accordingly!
First time seeing 'hair ice', on downed logs about 100 feet from the parking lot! Evidently it's a fungal-related phenomenon. Very cool, wish I had snapped pics. I hope they're still there in the coming days for you to see, dear reader.
Ascent was very pleasant, we climbed as the sun crept into the valley. Trail is well maintained, getting slightly rockier towards the top. I brought a garbage bag for trash collection but only really collected about 10 items. (A disappointing amount of cigarette butts, considering the devastating nearby Bear Gulch fire last summer.)
On this beautifully warm, clear and sunny day we lunched at Lena Lake near the water by a drowned fire grate, explored the ~8 campsites at the far end. The crossing @ Lena Creek (north side of lake) is flowing heavy, would be a bit tough to cross but doable if you're motivated. Basked at the high Lunch Rock overlooking the calm waters for about 10 minutes before descending at around 11:30 AM. MANY more people, dogs and families on the ascent - this sun had everyone smiling, the mood was infectious! Full parking lot back in the chilled and foggy valley bottom.
This perfect day was capped off by snagging a walk-up 2 PM reservation @ the Hama Hama Oyster Saloon, and watching a Seahawks Divisional playoff game blowout!

Thanks for the report and picking up trash along the way!
