Rampart Ridge Snowshoe — Saturday, Dec. 20, 2025

Mount Rainier Area > SW - Longmire/Paradise
on the route up to the ridge

Needed to get some good snowy views in and decided that Longmire area was the best bet, least windy and least problematic with the recent floods/rains.  It was a lovely winter wonderland.  Saw a deer when we first drove in, many people were showing up to build snowmen and wander around Longmire proper.  We decided to do the Rampart ridge loop clockwise.  It was snowy from the bottom, some minor standing water on the trail but completely fine if your boots are waterproof.  Halfway up the hill (~5 switchbacks in) we crossed a large downed tree.  Got some nice views, counted roughly 5 more blowdowns along the loop (one just at the top, and three more on the way down).  Never saw the mountain, but that's okay.  Carried microspikes and snowshoes, but never needed them.  Asked the rangers why the gate to Paradise was closed, and they explained they are trying to hire two more plow drivers (and one plow broke down).  Hopefully they find some good plow drivers soon.
