My friend and I decided to dust off our Nordic gear and head up to Blewitt Pass. We pulled into the parking area opposite the sno park at the top of the pass around noon. Two other skiers were just getting back and warned us that the trail was horrible, they only made it 1/2 a mile. Someone had driven up there leaving deep ruts and bare patches on the FS road. We decided to try anyway.
The first half mile was awkward over uneven terrain and low snow coverage. But once we turned off on the trail, which discourages motor vehicles, we found deep soft snow and minimal traffic. The trail is ungroomed but there is a path where others have gone before. At about a mile the views open up and it becomes a true winter wonderland. Perfect weather: partly sunny, no wind, low 30s. We turned around at 2.5 miles. And the trek back to the car went fast: 5 miles round trip, 500 feet gain, 2 hours.
