At my son's request, this time we did a waterfall hike! We've been doing a lot of repeats and local trails lately, so it was nice to drive out somewhere new that I had never been before.
I got lazy and made a mistake - I didn't really read the trail description before we went - so we missed the huge falls. But we did do the longer hike, and saw the rapids, which my kids were very pleased about.
The campground is closed this time of year, which means you park at the closed gate (there's room for a dozen or so cars), and also means the bathrooms are locked up.
The trail was in good shape - lots of leaves and wet and slippery, and the roots and rocks are hidden under the leaves. Some little feet tumbled on this day. I think we saw 2 downed logs, both of which my kids were able to either go over or under.
Once the trail splits to the end loop, we took it clockwise, which follows the river first. Almost at the bottom of the loop there is a small offshoot trail where you can access the river - my 5 year old was able to make his way down on his own and my 3 year old needed some assistance. From there I swung them over the water onto a little gravel "island" where we had a nice view of the rapids. The kids love throwing rocks in the water so we hang out here for a while.
We saw some huckleberries on the trail but they are pretty much done. My daughter ate one but spit it out. Seems like most of them are seedy and not very sweet anymore.
The uphill at the very end is a bit strenuous as the trail description suggests. My son hasn't complained on many hikes about uphill but he did on this one. Thankfully that section isn't very long!
To those who have been following me - I have fallen behind in writing trip reports, but we have still remained on track with our challenge. David and I have completed the 52 Hike Challenge and Holly is now 4 hikes away! I may not catch up on trip reports, but you can look back on my Garmin History to see where else we've been.
