We had hoped to see some fall colors on our lollipop hike of the Equestrian Trail combined with the Bridge Trail, but the trees had not changed their leaf colors yet this year.

The Equestrian Trailhead and trails had been closed for much of the summer so State Parks could repair a culvert with serious erosion problems. We had noted the trouble spot in the past, so we could see the fresh repair work that had included replacing the old culvert and doing some serious stabilization.

Park trails and forests were quiet -- we encountered only two other hikers and the birds were subdued as well as the resident species don't do as much calling in the winter when they aren't looking for mates and defending territories.

The Bridge Trail has a few fallen trees across it that were easy to step over. The East Hardy Ridge and Upper Hardy Creek Trail were brushy but easy to navigate.

The Upper Hardy Creek Trail is on a roadbed, but it hasn't had vehicles on it in years so it has reverted to a trail. Photo by Susan Saul
Hikers often wonder about this vault toilet in the backcountry. It was installed by a former park manager who wanted to develop some reservable hike-in campsites nearby. The project never got approvals and funding. Photo by Susan Saul
