Puget Sound and Islands > San Juan Islands
Mount Baker to the Northeast

A short time after I arrived I watched a heron fishing, really consecrating on the water and then suddenly it took off. A moment later I saw why, two bald eagles swooped down in the same place, talons out and both skimmed the water. One came up with a fish and took off east for the mainland and the other landed on the fir tree overlooking the parking lot.

Things quieted down after that for a walk on the trail. Mount Baker was in view today as well as the rest of the Cascades  The trail and surrounding area is relatively dry compared to what is to come in winter through spring. No mud on the trail and all the small bridges are in place. In the winter the  high tides and wind can move them around and all but the trail gets saturated.

There is an informative kiosk at the trailhead that illustrates the history and nature of the wetlands. No restroom.
