North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway

Gold in the hills but not larch. This is one of my favorite hikes just about any time of the year but especially in the fall. The beautiful reds of the vine maples were almost gone, but the bigleaf maples were putting on a show! Green moss, tunnels of golden leaves and vistas of Big Four and Hall Peak with a bonus of waterfalls across the valley made for a very scenic hike w/o larch and a long drive. The trail is in good shape, but narrow and rocky, so if you have no patience for picking your way thru boulder fields best to find another hike. The stream crossing that can be tricky in spring and summer was dry, in fact after viewing the waterfall we ate here instead. The upper part of the trail was frosty so beware of slippery rocks! More people on the trail than I have seen in the past, but not a crowd. Loos were in good shape, clean and stocked today. Be prepared to pack out all your trash.

My favorite fall hike, for sure! I went last week and the fall colors were spectacular and, most important for me, the stream crossings were dry and easy:-))

W Cady would be such a pretty fall hike! The hiking grandmas go every Tuesday, and I have another friend I sometimes hike with on Thursday. I can't do the hiking I used to tho, Father Time tags along.
