Loads of hikers took advantage of nice weather on the last day before the closure of the Sunrise Road. The sky was blue but the air became increasingly filled with smoke from the Wildcat Fire. After hours of hiking my sinuses were hurting.
Obviously lots of the hikers were novices not familiar with proper behavior in our glorious landscape. We saw about twenty folks, kids included, stomp the fragile tundra on First Burrough. One pair had their picnic on it. Maybe WTA has an idea how to reach people not linked to outdoors culture and -groups for some education.

The only thing that works is park rangers policing the trails and handing out warnings or fines. It's like the highways, if there are no cops nothing is going to stop people from speeding. Unfortunately there are next to no park rangers or USFS people working the trails anymore thanks to our government.

You are so right. And, al;as, there have been way too few rangers for a long time. That;s one sad effect of the chronic underfunding of the Park Service (as with the Forest Service). For other effects just look at the bathrooms, e.g. the one at the White River Entrance. It's a national embarrassment.

Have seen this exactly behavior at every hike I have been on in the last 2 months. Not sure the best way to curb it. 😩
