Shriner Peak — Friday, Oct. 3, 2025

Mount Rainier Area > SE - Cayuse Pass/Stevens Canyon

I’ve been wanting to do this trail for a few years in the fall to check out the colorful foliage and finally made it happen today. The trail was in great shape, and I only saw three people while hiking and then four rangers and volunteers at the lookout boarding it up for winter. There’s some nice color along the trail, and it looks like more to come still. The color started around 1.67 miles in, give or take (by my watch which was off a little since my overall mileage ended up higher than what it’s listed at). The mountain was out when I arrived in the park but played hide and seek most of the way up, and decided to hide while I was at the lookout (only to come back out when I was driving out of the park). I saw bear scat but no bears or other wildlife. If you want fall color and some solitude, and you don’t mind the long and steep climb, this is a good one right now.

Pretty sure Georg and I met you on your way up. Nice report and pics. Our best view of the Mountain was on our way to the trailhead on 123; a cloudless view that disappeared once we reached a view point. We also met the ranger carrying the drill. She said they could not finish up till she arrived with the drill to attach the shutters.

It was so great to meet you both! It was the same for me- I wish I had stopped to take a photo on the way in! Hope you enjoyed the rest of your hike!
