Black Cap Mountain in the remote Pasayten Wilderness offers a rewarding ridge scramble with incredible views of the Eureka Creek Valley. My climb began with a long approach over Slate Pass and Fred’s Lake before bushwhacking toward Shellrock Pass. From a bivy below the pass, I tackled Black Cap’s intimidating ridge, which turned out to be a fun class 2 scramble with a couple of class 3 moves. Reaching the summit after last year’s setback felt like redemption, and though I turned back before Lake and Monument due to heat, the trip was an unforgettable highlight in the North Cascades.
