Trip Report

Camp Muir — Saturday, Sep. 20, 2025

Mount Rainier Area > SW - Longmire/Paradise
Camp Muir above the upper reaches of the snowfield.

My brother and I tried to reach Camp Muir yesterday, but stopped at about 9000 ft. The snowfield is full of crevasses; parties coming down warned us that it was hazardous to cross without proper equipment. To the east of the remaining snowfield, the route is basically all scree or talus now, a bit loose and tedious but not hard to navigate. One can still get to Anvil Rock without crossing the snowfield.

We had views of Adams, St. Helens, and Hood, though they were shrouded in haze.

Elevation 7660 ft.
Mt. Adams
Marmot near Paradise.

I disagree that are dangerous crevasses on the snowfield I climbed to Camp Muir today 9/24/25. All the snow had melted away the snowfield was 100% glacier ice so every crevasse was visible. I saw many 1-3 inch wide crevasses but I didn't see any crevasse big enough to swallow a person. I think the worst that would happen is you sink up to you're knee and have to spend a minute or two wiggling you're foot out. I feel pretty safe crossing the Muir Snowfield unroped because 1) Thousands of people climb the snowfield every year and no one disappears 2) I saw the Muir Snowfield when it was not covered by snow and didn't see any big crevasses 3) It makes scientific sense that a thin slowly moving glacier that is moving over low angle smooth terrain wouldn't have many crevasses.

There are at least a few that a person could fall into — certainly much bigger than 1-3 inches wide. To me, that qualifies as dangerous. But yes, they are straightforward and simple enough to navigate around. I would not want to be on that snowfield in a whiteout right now, whereas I'd feel completely safe in April.

And with snow coming soon, there will be weak bridges across the bigger crevasses. This is not the time to downplay crevasses.
