We chose to go clockwise on this trail, and it worked out well starting from the south side of the mountain. Water is available at South Fork of the Toutle river, Loowit creek, and the springs that are on the trail past Loowit creek and before Windy Pass.
Lots of good camping at Toutle River and Pumice Butte (both North and south side) We chose to camp at the Ape Canyon Junction. We each carried about 3 liters per day and filled all at Toutle and then again at the springs, that was enough for us.
