North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway

The trail was in good condition, only a handful of trees across the trail. Most had a good route around or had been chain sawed to a manageable step over.
The trail starts flat on compact dirt and alternates with rocky sections for the first couple miles and minimal elevation gain. You cross the creek at 3.3 miles and then the real climbing starts. *note this is the only reliable water source so fill up here for the challenging climbing. Climb through the shady forest for the next couple miles. It was tough for me and a rest stop with food at the falls would have dramatically improved my climb.
There were many huckleberries on the hike up but they were a bit sour. Peekaboo views of peaks kept us motivated. I think we were seeing Big Four and Dickerman.
Then we arrived at a little trail up to the left for a magnificent view of Bake, Shuksan and a bunch of peaks in front of them for a perfect picture of mountain layers. Really breath taking. But don't stop here just 5 more minutes of climbing and we made it to Mount Forgotten Meadows. Unlike the tart huckleberries the blue berries were sweet and delicious. keep moving through the Meadow to get Northern views and a small pond could offer water if you brought your filter.
Get your camera ready for the most incredible picture opportunities.
This was challenging but I would definitely do it again.
