North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20
Lookout Mountain Lookout by senmorales

A great trail with easy access, as the whole road is paved to the trailhead. I am writing this trip report to emphasize the warning that there is a wasp’s nest in the ground on the trail at 1,600’ about .3 miles into the trail. Many members of our group went around this section in the way down, as the wasps were angry and about 4 people got stung on the way up. No allergies in our group so not a massive problem for us and it was still worth the hike for the views!

Ngsha on Lookout Mountain Lookout

I hiked yesterday 8/27. we left about 9:11 and we reached the lookout about 12:30. Me and dog had it ourselves. We kept on slow and steady pace. Plenty huckleberries to eat. I stopped and talked to for 25 minutes or so one of the over night camper on the lake returnee. Both of the people were in the lake.
I passed through the 1st mile or so with caution the wasp's warning .I kept the dog on the leash. I did not want sting. I did not noticed. Maybe it was too early. On return, the same general description, next a tree, there were a horizontal crack on the trail two bees out flying, Oh' maybe this the hive. the bees didn't look to me a wasp. they seem regular bees. I just run down as fast as I could. I did not stop and study and wait to get sting. I was in the Sahale 5 or 6 weeks ago. It was so busy espically the cascade pass goers are too many. If anyone wants a solitude adventure...the lookout moutain is the right place.
