Sooo, we don’t do a lot of investigating before setting out, and followed the suggested directions in the hike overview, and by doing so we drove past an easier-to-access (for us) starting point at crab creek trailhead on forest road 90. Which is definitely open, and accessible…
What we did do was set out for cussed hollow from the lower Lewis river falls campground, taking forest road 90 back toward northwoods, then on the pepper creek road until its juncture with forest road 93. About four miles past the junction, the road is washed out…there was likely enough space to fit a vehicle with a few feet to spare, but we weren’t feeling great about the risk and ended up doing another hike instead. On the way back, we realized we should have just started this one at crab creek. Highly recommend not going toward Spencer butte for an hour when the alternative starting point is 5 minutes from you. Either way, the hike overview should probably offer both starting points due to this washout, which likely affects Spencer butte and other nearby hikes.
Beautiful area, some noise from orv’s but had a fantastic time anyway.
Happy trails!
