I was able to check off two hikes from my Olympics Day Hiking book. We drove up around to Neah Bay and did the short Cape Flattery hike before heading to our destination to Shi Shi and the Point of the Arches. We arrived at the residential parking area in the afternoon, and made the smart decision of dropping out packs off at the trailhead before parking and walking my way back. I went with a few friends, and we made it to the beach in about an hour. The trail was muddy but manageable. After about 45 minutes we found a nice spot to camp on the beach. With about 2 miles of beach it was nice since the 15 or so tents were pretty spread out. It didn't rain, but the evening was overcast and misty so everything got damp, but not bad. We woke up early and went out to the Arches at low tide. It was very cool to see all of the sea life, caves and large trees growing off the rock formations in the ocean. After walking around a couple of hours and jumping in the ocean, we headed out. It was a long drive to get there, but well worth the trip. Growing up on the Washington coast, it was the first time I did the full loop all of the way around the peninsula.
