Table Mountain — Thursday, Jul. 24, 2025

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area
sunrise enroute

This trip report is for the abandoned Table Mountain trail which is separate from the maintained Table Mountain trail. Its start is located on west side of Table Mountain on the Chain Lake Loop and leads up numerous switchbacks through forest and talus slopes to the saddle separating the prow of the southern segment of the mountain (endpoint of the maintained trail) from the northern prow. I have been told the trails were split by a rockslide around 50 years ago though many maps still show both Table Mountain trails connected. There is a large whitish rock on the Chain Lakes Loop trail below the northern prow which marks the entry point to the abandoned trail. The trail seems to be getting easier to follow over the years, but is rough or less defined at some times with encroaching scrub and a few fallen trees. It is therefore a bit of a scramble in some locations, though with little exposure except for the sketchy path to the very top of the northern prow (the highpoint of this part of Table Mountain) overlooking Iceberg Lake. All but one of the snow banks have melted off the old trail. The one still over the trail is not too steep, but traction and poles are very helpful, maybe even necessary depending on the iciness of the snow. Once on top, there is much to explore. This northern part of Table Mountain has much more acreage than the maintained route and a hike around the perimeter overlooks the Bagley Lakes, Herman Saddle and Iceberg Lake. View of Iceberg Lake from the prow is dizzying. The areas melted out have lots of flower fields and small meadows that I think far exceed the flowers of the maintained Table Mountain trail. Though a little adventurous, the short, but steep climb up from the Lake Loop has a great payoff in scenery and solitude.

David Ryeburn on Table Mountain

About 50 years ago or maybe a bit more I ascended this trail, ice axe and mountaineering boots quite necessary at the time. I was followed by two people in running shoes, clearly not equipped to go where I was. My shouts urging them to retreat were ignored. So I descended, and before I got down where they were, they turned around and probably saved their own lives. I then turned around, re-ascended, and enjoyed the rest of my transit across the top and descent to the parking lot below. Then maybe 10 or 15 years ago I looked for the bottom of the trail and could not find it. It is good to know that it still exists, and where it is.

My ice axe, in addition to being carried for safety, was used to cut a few steps in steep portions of the ascent where multiple boot kicks weren't enough.

Do not go there if conditions are inappropriate and you are not properly equipped and trained.

It would be interesting to find out when the trail connecting the two parts of the Table collapsed, but, I have not been able to locate that, precisely. It is sad that even on the latest USGS (2023) map, they still show the entire old trail fully connected. While I was there yesterday, I noted a brown track down the collapsed wall where a class 3 scramble is possible. It was about three feet wide (as seen from a ways back) and either an awful lot of people already did this scramble this season (I doubt it) or there was another little slide there (likely). I have done the scramble a few times over the decades and even remember a time when it was possible to safely glissade down it (on a rare perfect snow bank). I doubt I will be "connecting" the two trail segments again at my age and just having two Table Mt trails to chose from is good enough at my age.

Jarv on Table Mountain

During my college days at Western we would camp in the heather on the westside of
Table. Beautiful site at sunset. Anyway, is it still possible to hike east to west across the top even with the collapse.
