Trip Report

Gunn Peak — Friday, Jul. 11, 2025

Central Cascades > Stevens Pass - West

Started up around 12:30PM timing for weather. This is a steep, overgrown trail through forest that turns into subalpine wonderland above treeline. Snow was not a problem, water available at 5370 feet, and bugs were manageable.

To start off, the best stream crossing is at upstream. Look for a fire ring where there's a faint trail to the right. Crossing location has many logs.

The trail then heads up brutally steep. Trail becomes trickier past the gully at 4000 feet, when it starts to be quite overgrown and so steep at times that class 2-3 scrambling moves and veggie belay may be needed. I was hiking in the clouds with 100% humidity and the bushes were sweating and brushing on me - it feels like I was in a carwash.

Going above tree line, it enters sub-alpine wonderland, where wildflowers were blooming. There are quite a few nice campsites. At 5370 feet, you will find running water. There were some patchy snow but was not a problem and can be bypassed without detour.

The scramble up was pretty straightforward. At the time when I hit the summit, the clouds cleared up quite a bit. The view was amazing and worth the sufferfest going up.
