Snowgrass Flat by PNWAstroOtter

Coming from Seattle, I got to the trail around 9 am(almost a 4 hr drive) which was a bit later than I had hoped. I opted to go up the Snowgrass flats trail (instead of berry patch) to access the bypass trail and camp along the PCT section. I didn’t hit snow until above 6,400 feet. The temps were in the 80s that day in Packwood. The sun was brutal once you got above the tree line. The views were amazing and according to my garmin we were only supposed to have 7 mile an hour winds. Boy was that wrong. Once the sun set the winds picked up all night long and were def well above 15 mph. Because most people had to camp at the intermittent groups of trees. I ended up with a hole in my tarp because of how bad the wind was blowing my tent around. It was also kicking up very fine (partly magnetic) sand that was blowing right thru my mosquito netting and I ended up having to sleep with my face covered or I would wake up with sand in my ears and eyes. It didn’t let up all night long and through the morning so it was a bit hard to cook anything. I was greeted with a very quiet marmot near my site who only let out one peep all night long. The temps were about 10-15 degrees hotter the next morning and by the time I left Packwood, by noon it was easily 90+. Can’t wait to do this trip again when it’s a bit cooler and less windy
