When reports start mentioning bugs in swarming, morale-crushing numbers, I turn to one of my go-to hikes where elevation and lingering snow usually keep them at bay. It takes a bit more effort and gear this early in the season, but the tradeoff — no bugs, no crowds — is worth it.
Up to the Chain Lakes junction, the trail has a few snow patches, but nothing that requires special equipment. After that, continuing toward the ridge involves dropping some elevation and crossing a steep snowfield where traction (and maybe a second thought) is a good idea.
Beyond that point, expect long traverses on snow-covered slopes with decent runouts, and a few steep sections that keep things interesting. Based on what I saw, it'll be at least a couple more weeks before most of the snow clears out.
I made it all the way to East Portal. The snow actually helped smooth out parts of the rocky trail, which was a nice change. The final ridge is snow-free, and the final viewpoint still delivers—big views, no bugs, and just enough wind to keep things feeling alpine.

Any sign of Goat Lake yet? Even a hint of turquoise? Great trip report, thank you!

Hello!! The lake is just starting to thaw. If you zoom in on the 3rd pic, you can see the turquoise around the edges. I think it should be possible to find a dry spot to pitch a tent after the high temps this week.
Hope you and the dogs are doing well. I love seeing their pictures in your trip reports.
