Spider Gap - Buck Creek Pass Loop — Sunday, Jul. 13, 2025

Central Cascades > Stevens Pass - East
View East from Upper Lyman Lake Trail

We hiked the loop in reverse of the normal way we saw everyone else doing it. We went clockwise from Buck Creek to Cloudy Pass to Spider Gap to Phelps Creek and then back to Trinity Trailhead on the road. Upon completion we both declared this was the superior way!

All told, this trail was very scenic and beautiful, though there is a lot of fire damage in Buck Creek. We did it in three days.

Things to note:

A bridge is out a few miles from the Buck Creek TH, and you need to ford the creek. It is fast moving but only knee deep. Dog owners take note.

Spider Gap, the snow was soft. It is particularly steep on the north side.  It was sketchy for me personally, having little experience on snowfields. We wished we'd have had some micro spikes at least.  I wouldn't leave my poles at home for this one either.  Many people were doing it fine. Approaching our descent on the Phelps Creek side, it looks like a drop-off until you get closer, then you see it is comparatively tame.

Mosquitoes are BAD this time of year. We brought an extra mosquito net shelter in which we could hang out outside of our own individual tents and cook our meals, and this was the move! (Picture included of Zen Mosquito Dome 3000™).

There's a lot of blow downs from Buck Pass to PCT and it really slows you down.

There is a shortcut trail between Suiattle Pass and Cloudy Pass. Our guidebook told us not to take it, but though rocky and steep, we had no issues and thought it was very beautiful.

Going clockwise, the junction with the Upper Lyman Lake Trail is a little bit hidden in the trees.  Though this will not really be an issue if you are going the conventional way, we had to search for it (even though it was right where the sign said it was, lol.)

Trailhead dogs: there are some very sweet and happy dogs that must live at the private property adjacent to the Trinity Trailhead. They are very social and friendly, but they will follow you for a while down the trail and stand by your car as you're trying to pull away. Please be aware for their safety when driving in and out.

Lost items: a phone at the Trinity TH, and some oddly abandoned camping items on the north side of the bridge out.  If you find my NUUN electrolyte tablets, you can have them.

Thanks for the detailed update! I am glad I invested time into treating my clothes with permethrin given the mosquito situation, doing this loop next week! FWIW the reason the guidebook told you to avoid the shortcut between Suiattle Pass and Cloudy Pass is that most seasons it is snow covered late into the season. I think this year it's not given the below average snow levels, I will take it too :)

That makes sense! I'm glad you found it helpful. LMK if there's other information you're interested in.

Thanks! I was going to ask you about your mosquito net but I found some online. I briefly debated purchasing this but I think I will hold off, because next year I plan to upgrade my tent to Durston X-Mid 2 which allows one to pitch the inner alone, thus providing the same benefit without an extra piece to carry (I am not like hardcore ultralight but just trying to keep the gear 'manageable light' :) ).

Were there any people at the Larch Knob? I am planning to do the loop in the conventional direction and am a bit worried w.r.t. what I am going to do if I come up there and all the spots are taken. I am starting on a Wednesday with the goal that hopefully there is less competition for spots, but still I just don't want to be coming back down to Phelps basin and I don't want to be going up Spider Gap in late afternoon/early evening either.

I had to look up where Larch Knob was. That was an incredibly beautiful spot. I did notice a sign for a privy as we cruised through there on our way down, but we did not stop to investigate the campsites unfortunately. If they are visible from the trail, we didn't even see them. We were passing through on Saturday and only saw one person down by the water, and he acted surprised to see us. He had all his stuff with him, i.e., not camping. We were there on Saturday. I wouldn't have been surprised if there were campers there given the outstanding views, but for your sake, at least the sites are situated between two challenging sections. (FWIW This was one reason we thought the clockwise route was superior, because you don't have to compete for campsites as much when you're going opposite the conventional trajectory, and Phelps Creeks was quite populated compared to Buck Creek.)

For mosquito net, or Mosquito Dome 3000™, we used mosquito net sewn into a rectangular solid for draping beds I bought for $15 on Amazon, which weighed 3/4 pound. I pitched it diagonally using 2 trekking poles, 2 guylines, and 6 stakes. It is perhaps not the most durable, but it did the job. It's plenty of room for two, and it's somewhere to boil water outside your primary shelter. Photos added to the original post of the practice setup in my backyard for reference. Obviously, this would not work as a primary shelter, and it would not work if you are using trekking poles for your primary shelter as it requires trekking poles (although I could imagine pitching it on a ridge-line if you found the perfectly placed trees).

Hope this helps and you have a safe and fantastic adventure.

I did find a phone at the Trinity trailhead. If you can describe it I will send it to you.

Oops, these items I mentioned were only items I encountered, and not items I myself lost. I was just letting people know what was out there! I could have been more clear. Thanks though.
