Made it to the Beckler Peak trailhead by noon. There were a few cars, but they seemed to almost all be doing Beckler peak. Alpine Baldy is a designated bike route, but you can hike safely as well. The route begins with a lot of overgrown brush, but it’s safe enough to bike through with a little bushwhacking on the handlebars.
the climb starts about a mile in and gets significantly steep a few miles in. 2 large downed trees that I carried my bike over. Beautiful campsite at 5 miles before the single track starts. The final 2 miles of the ride are professionally made single-track, switchbacking frequently. The view from the meadow makes all the hard climbing worth it with wildflowers popping and a beautiful view of the valley and surrounding peaks.
The way down was flowy and smooth, super fun. Up until the rocky portion halfway down, which was only a pain due to me being on a rigid gravel bike. Still more fun going down than up!
I read that this will eventually become a loop trail. For now, it’s out and back, but thanks to the lack of crowds and wide road for most of the trail, this was still very safe. I saw one hiker all day and a group of 3 mtn bikers on my way out. Overall a perfectly difficult and beautiful and rugged ride.

Thanks for the report. I've always been curious about this one, and there's not many reports. A loop would be awesome, but where would it end up? I have considered bushwhacking up from the Beckler Peak Trail to save some mileage. Also would be a good start to Jakes Lake and environs?

You're welcome, that was my main reason for posting this. There is an active community on Trailforks posting updates via trip reports with a couple reports from July up. Since this is both hiker and biker friendly, I thought it was worth posting here as well.
Here's the latest on the loop connection, from trailforks: "The plan to connect to the Beckler Peak hiking trail to make a loop is being questioned due to the steep grades. Evergreen has proposed a new route that would be mostly new singletrack and some road-to-trail conversion."
I am excited to see what they pull off!
