Bay to Baker Trail — Sunday, Jul. 6, 2025

Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area

I dont often rate trails low, any hike is a good hike, but this one is pretty poorly maintained. And to be fair I was riding a mountain bike (allowed) and not hiking from Maple Falls to Glacier. The first couple of miles are actually not bad until the trail crosses Mt Baker Hwy. At this point the trail becomes very overgrown and difficult to navigate with blackberries and some nettles . Although partly based on an old railroad grade it was definetly not in typical "rails to trails" condition with the surface being an overgrown single track. It also moslty parralles mount baker highway after crossing it which adds the bonus of traffic noise. It got bad enought that we never made it to Glacier as our legs were getting torn up with all the overgrowth. Hopefully in the future this trail which is planned to run from Mt Baker Ski Resort to the Bellingham Bay can be improved but at this point I couldnt recommend it.
