Went out to Talapus and Olallie Lakes for a rainy Saturday trail run with the intention of continuing on to Pratt Lake before turning around. When we arrived around 3:15 we were surprised to see that the parking lot was full on such a rainy day but it is a very accessible trail off I-90 so I am sure it’s always relatively busy.
Our hike up was rather uneventful, the tree cover provided a a good amount of protection from the rain so we didn’t get too wet. However, after taking the cutoff trail that connects to the Pratt Lake Trail and climbing up and around Olallie Lake the trees broke up a bit and we opted to put on our rain jackets as we started to get more wet. The Pratt Lake Trail gets a little muddy in this section but for the most part you can hop around the puddles. After we took the split to drop into Pratt Lake Basin we realized the entire basin was in a cloud. We were pretty chilly at this point and decided to turn around before dropping all the way down to the lake so that we could get back to the car before conditions became too miserable.
The run back to the trailhead is super cruisy and very enjoyable. It’s a great trail. We will definitely be back.
