Trip Report

Snow Peak — Wednesday, May. 14, 2025

Eastern Washington > Okanogan Highlands/Kettle River Range
Hiking out in the rain

We hiked to the cabin via the Snow Peak Trail #10. It appeared we were the first to use it this year. The road to the trailhead had a few small trees blown over and had to be moved, otherwise was in great condition all the way to the trailhead.

We saw quite a bit of bear skat on the trail and did hear a young bear near the trail, but did not visibly see the bears. The trail was bare and easy hiking for the first 2 miles, the last 1+ miles was covered in snow and required snow shoes. There were several spring run-offs near the cabin that could be used for filtering water.

The cabin was great and provided shelter from hail/rain storm and a very windy first night. However, we had a blue bird-day for hiking to the top of the peak, snow shoes were not required.

Thanks for the report! Got a reservation to head up there soon, and this is so helpful! How much snow was there where you used snowshoes? Considering snowshoes vs. microspikes+gaiters if there is just minor post-holing. Did it look like you'd need snowshoes for a morning hike along the Sherman Peak loop?

Was there plenty of wood and propane?

It's hard to say if you will need snowshoes on this hike, it really depends on how fast the snow is melting. It will certainly be almost gone in a few weeks from when we were there. My guess is that you would not have to battle the snow too much. We did not go on the Sherman Peak Loop, but there was not much snow left on the Kettle Crest Trail portion that we hiked and we did a whole day of hiking around Snow Peak without snowshoes.
We used the propane stove a few times, there were several more tanks in the outhouse but I did not check to see if they were full. Plenty of firewood.
