Trip Report

Lime Kiln Trail — Sunday, Mar. 30, 2025

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway

Recorded on my Garmin watch:

- Total miles: 7.08

- Total hike time: 2hr 39min

- Total moving time: 2hr 18 min

- Total elevation gain: 665ft

This was a nice walk in the woods with very little elevation! The first mile or so is pretty boring, but once you see the first giant tree stump the scenery gets more interesting--tons of moss-draped trees, lovely views of the river, glittering wood moss, salmon berry flowers blooming, skunk cabbage blossoms peeking out. Lime kiln was cool but nothing to call home over.

There are definitely some treacherous muddy sections where you'll either need to balance across some logs or walk carefully through deep mud (mud intensity ramps up in a couple sections at the 3 miles mark). You will also need to walk through some water on parts of the trail. Poles might be nice if you want help with balance, although I didn't have them and survived. You'll need to duck under some fallen trees as well. Otherwise, trail is very easy to follow.
