A quiet little state park with a mixture of shoreline, meadows, woods, and bogs, perfect for a late-afternoon winter adventure. Whidbey certainly has larger and better-developed parks, but these lesser-known spaces are often less-crowded, offering peaceful solitude as you walk along the shore or through the trees (other than the noise of Navy jets regularly flying overhead). The trails are in fairly good shape with some mud and exposed roots as the only real obstacles. The incline from the beach or parking area to the back meadows isn't a challenge but adds to the workout you'll receive. The trails offer a few different options, giving you a choice depending on how much time you have and how long you want to be out. Along the way I witnessed heron, gulls, and a family of deer grazing in the grass. If the sky is clear and you can time it right, the view of the sunset over the Olympics is breathtaking.
Note: When I was there, the main parking area and all amenities were closed, so parking was limited to the beach overview lot.
