This is a great winter hike: cool temperatures and little chance of encountering rattlesnakes or ticks. We only went to the first dune for a total of 4.5 miles round-trip (includes exploring around the dune). Continuing to the second dune would add 3 more miles for a total of 7+ miles round-trip.
There is no bathroom at the trailhead, but there are a couple of porta potties just a ½ mile down the road at the boat launch.
The trailhead is easy to find and the hike is gentle on the feet, knees, lungs, and heart. It was fun playing on the sand dune. The views of the Columbia River are stunning. We spotted many varieties of ducks and birds near the water and some deer on an island in the river (binoculars required).
We were the only people in the vicinity on a gorgeous, sunny Wednesday. It stayed in the 30’s all day, but with little wind and bright sunshine, it didn’t feel that cold.
