The road to the trailhead is fairly long and fairly rough, definitely potholes to deal with, though I don’t think high clearance is needed. The trail alternates between mud and slush, waterproof boots are highly recommended, no need for microspikes unless there is a hard freeze. There were a couple spots with large trees that fell on the trail, not super easy to navigate, you might want to skip this hike if you or your dog has any mobility restrictions. The lake isn’t completely frozen so my pup loved taking a dip, I swear Berners literally can’t feel cold. Plenty of backpackers out today. Awesome hike! One of the best bang for your buck trails around.
