Made the trip from Skagit valley to Mazama to check out the town and hike to the lookout. Worth the drive! The views from the lookout are so cool - 360 degrees of North Cascade peaks. The lookout is currently staffed and a sign requests visitors to stay off the stairs and deck of the lookout. The trail is in good shape if a little dusty. The middle section of trail is pretty steep, some roots and rocks. Once you break out to the ridgeline, you get views and larches. They are just starting to turn. Saw chipmunks, grouse, jays, and a few cows! Ran into maybe 10 people on a Tuesday afternoon. The FS road is ROUGH. Only one big rut, no real potholes but the washboarding and jagged rocks made for very slow going. The FS road is approximately 12 miles long so it took about an hour to get to the TH. I made time to stop by Mazama Public House for a beer and lunch and recommend you do the same.
