Upper Lena Lake — Friday, Aug. 2, 2024

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal
Upper Lena lake, overnight. It’s only 7 miles to the lake, but almost 4000 thousand feet elevation gain… and the majority of that is during the last 2 miles.
The berries were out in full force, including amazing lakeside blueberries.
I’d like to come back here and stay for two nights so that we can chill more and explore a little further in.

ROAD: this is one of the nicer TH roads - love it

BUGS: biting flies got me several times.

WILDLIFE: saw 3 grouse and got dive-bombed by a hummingbird.  Lots of little fish in the lake.

PEOPLE:  I expected it to be more crowded because it was Labor Day weekend, but we went on a Friday night and only saw one other group of campers and a few day hikers.  I saw a ton of people coming up the trail on Saturday when we were on our way down, so was happy that we missed all of that.

TRAIL: not bad!  It gets steep for the last 2.5 miles, but nothing overwhelming or technical.  A few scrambly bits and blowdowns.  My partner had to stop and rest several times, but he made it without dying.  It was a hot day and electrolytes were needed.  There were plenty of water sources for filtering along the way.
