Our group arrived at the Sunrise parking lot about 9:30, and it was filling up fast. We hiked the first and second Burroughs trails. While heading up the 2nd trail, we heard a loud rumbling noise. Looking down we could see where a small (but loud!) rock slide had landed on the trail where we had just walked. Trekking up second Burroughs can be a slog on a hot day. No tree cover and a steady uphill climb. Bring water. You'll need it! The view from the top, especially on a clear day, is spectacular. The Mountain is so close. The top is a great lunch stop. Be aware of those cute but pesky chipmunks. They are ready and waiting. Our return trip was down the other side of Burroughs towards Shadow Lake. The tree cover was a nice relief from the sun. There were fields of wildflowers, and, as a super bonus, we saw a small herd of 6 to 8 mountain goats. It was a great day to be at Mt. Rainier.
