Started from FR26 on Trail 213, up through the trees to the intersection with Trail 220. Nice views from the ridge back toward Mount St. Helens, down to the Green River valley, and to Ryan Lake. Trail opens up on the top with limited trees and quite a few post-eruption snags. Turned south on TR 220, followed it along ridge. There is an unmarked fork about a mile in. Take the right one, which will take you up and over a moderate incline and back down to Forest Road 2516; if you go left, you descend down to 2516, where you can go right to intersect the trail again. Where 2516 meets the correct trail, as opposed to the left hand fork, which we took, the map makes it look like the road ends. It doesn't.
Continue up the road about 100 yards to where a trail takes off to the right (look for log retaining wall holding up the trail), take the right and continue up. In about a half mile you intersect a trail coming in from the right. We took that one to get to the old Strawberry Mountain Lookout location. Nothing there but some old cables and good views in all directions, to Mount Adams and Mt. Rainier. The views would be better if the sky hadn't been hazy but still a fine view into the crater of Mount St. Helens.
