Flume Creek Trail — Wednesday, Jul. 17, 2024

Eastern Washington > Selkirk Range
Hooknose Mountain, 7210'

Active logging is still ongoing near the trailhead but it looks like work is winding down. The road is definitely in better shape than when I was here 4 years ago to hike Abercrombie. Trail is in good condition and I only counted 8 blowdowns, none of which were difficult to cross over or walk around.

After arriving to the ridge top near Abercrombie, my companion and I left the trail for a cross-country hike to Hooknose Mountain. The route is about 1.5 miles of easy walking with a few minor brushy sections. An intermittent bootpath passes several old campsites along the way.

There is a 300' drop to the 6700' saddle between the two peaks and a 500' climb to the summit from there.

No water up here except for the spring marked on the map next to a switchback at 6000' on the Flume Ck Trail. It is still flowing nicely and was a good spot to cool off on this blistering hot day. It is not obvious from the trail, but a well-worn path leads to it after crossing a dry creek bed.

10 miles RT and 3000' of gain.

Abercrombie Mtn from Hooknose. The route drops down the forested slope to the saddle
Diminutive Hooknose Lake to the north
The precipitous north face of Hooknose still holding a small snow patch
