South Coast Wilderness Trail - Toleak Point — Sunday, Jul. 7, 2024

Three of us did a two-night trip on the coast, with the goal of avoiding the 90+ degree heat everywhere else in the state.

Leaving from Seattle in the morning, I was a little concerned about tides and how far we could get on the first day, so we opted to go only as far as Scott's Bluff. The hiking was relatively easy, with the only issue being traffic jams at the rope ladders with many hikers heading north at the end of the 4th of July weekend. There's a large pile of beach debris at Scott's Bluff, which another hiker described as "off-putting." The creek also carries a fair amount of sand, so you might find your filter clogged up.

On day 2 we headed to Toleak Point, with tidepool visits along the way. The hiking was incredibly easy on the flat and firm sand. There are many camp spots north of the point just in the trees. South of the point most camping is on the sand.

We had ample time to admire tide pools, lounge in the shade of a tarp, and play with clay. Sunsets on both nights were spectacular. Saw two dead otters, a dead seal, plus living eagles, a deer, endless anemones, and a pair of racoons.

On the hike back at low tide we went around Scott's Bluff, but I wouldn't recommend this as it involved a lot of clambering and stepping carefully to avoid anemones.
