Klahhane Ridge — Saturday, Jun. 29, 2024

Olympic Peninsula > Northern Coast
Klahhane Ridge by Janette Powell

I went early (for both the sunrise & to beat the incoming rain predicted around midday), so I was the first in the hurricane ridge parking lot around 4:45am. I headed along the sunrise ridge & it was spectacular: wildflowers, deer & an ever evolving light & cloud show. The meadows on the upper switchback trails has flowers but it looks like early season (much more green than color). Along the ridge there are still patches of snow (some to walk over - it was soft & muddy at the edges, traction devices weren’t needed) & some patches of early flowers. I headed to the lake angeles overlook for my breakfast stop & turn around (approx 5 miles from my start) - fantastic vistas of PA, the Dungeness spit, Mt Baker, San Juan islands, Vancouver island, Gulf islands & the strait of Juan de Fuca. As you can imagine - a solitary wander out & progressively more humans on my return (that also had a few marmot sightings 😊).
