Ruby Mountain (7408') does involve some elevation gain, but provides a hard-to-beat view of many North Cascades peaks, as well as a unique look straight up Ross Lake. There are winter/spring routes from the north, but we started at Colonial Creek campground and took the longer approach from Fourth of July Pass, expecting the south-facing upper slopes to be mostly melted out by now, which was indeed the case. No walking on snow until the fairly flat summit ridge run. The Ruby Mountain trail (marked with a cairn and a "trail abandoned" sign) is in decent shape. There's significant blowdown in the lower section, but nothing too difficult to step over. You can lose the trail in a couple spots if you're not careful. A few short overgrown parts higher up made me wish I had brought clippers. After the official end of the unofficial trail (hmm), there's a bit of steep loose rock to scamper up. After reaching the summit ridge you head left and are soon at the small radio tower at the top. Bugs weren't out yet, but will be soon! Great hike, my 13 year old made it with minimal complaining.

Hi! The WTA description for Ruby Mountain is quite good, and I can't think of anything to add. The unmaintained trail is on gaia and caltopo as well. Good luck, it's a great hike and test of endurance.

Thank you for this great report! Did you happen to notice good water refill spots along the route? Wondering roughly how much water to carry

Good question. There was no easily accessible water on the Ruby Mountain trail despite some lingering snow patches. A few good sources on the trail leading up to Fourth of July Pass. So for this upcoming hot weather, definitely tank up for the final 4000' of climbing.
