My son and I started out at the Hummocks Trailhead, making our way up the Boundary West Trail towards the observatory. From there, we headed towards Coldwater Peak, where we intended to spend the night at Dome Camp. However, after reaching the junction of the Coldwater Trail and the Boundary Trail, we were not comfortable crossing the large snowfield that covered most of the east-facing slope. So instead, we decided to loop back to our vehicle, turning this into an 18.5-mile day hike.

Loved the black and white photo--people don't post those very often. Other photos are really great too.

I had the same exact thing happen to me yesterday June 15th. Left the Hummocks trailhead at 5:50 am with light rain and drizzle and by the time I got to the junction of Harry's Ridge it was a full-on blizzard and I ran into a large snow field just short of the natural archway. Plus I had an encounter with about a 500 lb black bear just past the small steel girder pedestrian bridge that's over the washout. 18.2 miles total.

I think I know exactly what snow field your talking about lol. We got through the arch and encountered another large snow field as we detoured towards Blastzone Peak.
